What camera-related Android 12 updates do you find compelling?
<https://blog.google/products/android/android-12/>

I have a handful of free Samsung phones from T-Mobile I can update
when and if I choose to do so (and when the update is available).

I generally don't update/upgrade unless/until there's a reason to.
And, besides, I already have two different GCam ports installed. :)

However, it's always good to keep abreast of camera updates, where, looking
up what is on Samsung's Android 12 that I might want, I see this:
<https://www.gottabemobile.com/samsung-galaxy-android-12-update-info/#Samsung-Android-12-Features>

The full gory list is in this Android 12 thread posted earlier today:
*What do you like/dislike about Android 12*
<https://groups.google.com/g/comp.mobile.android/c/YKsdyJctag8>

Just the camera stuff is listed below, where I ask you which are compelling?

*Camera*
Enjoy a simpler, clearer layout with a preview that shows only the
information you need. The scene optimizer button will only appear in Photo
mode if there's low light or you're scanning a document. Settings for
Portrait and Night modes are now more intuitive.

Lens and zoom: See the zoom level on the lens icons for easier zooming,
even in modes that only support one lens.

Video that never misses a moment: Recording now starts immediately after
you tap the Record button, instead when you release it. In Photo mode, touch
and hold the Shutter button to start recording a video. Drag your finger to
the Lock icon to continue recording without having to hold down the button.

Single take: Add extra time while recording in Single Take, so you don't
miss important moments. After the recording is finished, the content
selection menu has been improved to help you easily choose the perfect
shots.

Pro mode: Settings have been reorganized for a cleaner look. When grid
lines are on, horizontal level indicators help you line up the perfect shot.

Enhanced scan features: After scanning a document, you can zoom in for fine
editing. When you scan a QR code. you can choose from several options
depending on the type of QR code.

*Gallery*
Stories now show a video preview on the cover and a highlight video inside.
You can also see where each picture in a story was taken on a map.

More options are available for sorting albums that contain lots of photos.

Album covers are now shown at the top of the screen when you open albums.

Search suggestions have been improved to help you find pictures and videos.

Recent searches are also suggested.

Remastered pictures can be reverted to their original versions at any time,
even after they're saved.

You can now edit the date, time, and location that pictures and videos were
taken.

*Photo and video editor*
Add fun emojis and stickers to your pictures and videos.

Create video collages by combining multiple images and videos from your
Gallery.

The new Light balance option lets you edit the tone of pictures more
easily.

The Highlight reel editor has also been enhanced to give you even more
control.

Revert edited videos back to their original versions at any time, even
after they're saved. *Cut out a face, pet, building, or any other object
from a photo and paste it onto a different one.

*AR Emoji*
Use an AR emoji as your profile picture in Contacts and Samsung account.

You can choose from over 10 poses or create your own expressions.

New AR emoji stickers that show only your face has been added. Have fun
decorating your photos and sharing them with your friends.

Make cool dance videos with your AR emojis. Choose templates from 10
different categories, including #Fun, #Cute, and #Party.

Use your own drawings to create unique clothes for AR emojis.

*Messages*
Photos, videos, web links, and other content will now appear in search
results in the Messages app.

*Privacy*
See which apps are accessing sensitive permissions such as Location,
_Camera_, or Microphone in Permission usage history. You can deny
permissions for any apps you don't feel comfortable with.

A green dot will appear in the upper right corner of the screen when any
app is using the _camera_ or microphone so you can see if an app is
recording
you without your consent. You can also use quick panel controls to
temporarily block all apps from using the camera or microphone.

Take more control over apps that want to access your location. For apps
that only need to know your general area, such as weather apps, you can
allow access to your approximate location so they can't determine exactly
where you are.

Sometimes you need to copy sensitive information, like passwords or credit
card numbers, but you don't want it to fall into the wrong hands. You can
choose to be notified any time an app accesses content copied to the
clipboard in another app.

Why wasn;t it like this before and how do they know what information I need.

So they were bad previously.

Wonder how it makes it easier to zoom ?

Apple have a feature on photos where it takes a few photos before you hit the button
a sort of prequel in case you missed something.

Would be nice to have it on video too.
But my iphone starts recording when I tought the button not when I relase it anyway.
Bit of a silly idea to have it work they way it did in the first place.
So all they've have done is corrected something that was shit to begin with.

Should have been like that to start with.

I'm back bored with this now. :-)

Something doesn't have to be 'bad' to be improved upon.

Clever how it knows in advance about when you are going to hit the button.

Now I'm bored.

not really. it saves the last several seconds in a buffer, and when the
button is tapped, it has that ready for processing.

Sorry may 'bad' was the wrong word to use.
but something that is unintuitive should have been noticed earlier.

Noticed something on the windows PC as I needed to log a student out,
couldn;t find the logout option because they no longer login in, they sign in/out.

Seems that MS want people to be able to sign in to their account without
needing to login to a computer. Maybe this will be better option, I'm not yet convinced.

Most cameras do, usually it's a half press of the shutter release is detected so it's turns
metering, sometimes activates the LCD.

Of course AI and machine learning could be used to estimate when a photo is likely to be taken.
Such info gathered from accelerometers and landscape/portait orientation.
I'd have thought more cameras would have had this feature as it;s been possible for years now.
I was using it with a webcam connected to my Mac G4 tower in 2007.

If AI is as good, and sentient as promised, then regardless of how the phone is held when in video mode the orientation should always be corrected to deliver in landscape mode. Portrait orientation should only be possible in photo mode. Problem solved, portrait orientation video gone forever thanks to AI, & machine learning.

how about if phones built up a high voltage charge, similar to an how
electronic flash works, and then discharge it to anyone holding the
phone in portrait orientation and who is attempting to shoot video.

Simply put in a larger, square sensor and record horizontal 3:2 or 16:9
only (Dutch angles to 35° allowed...)

But your idea does have much appeal...

Only if you believe that portrait mode is never suitable for video, btu I think there are a very few occasions when it is.
When a saturn5 lifts off , when a tower block is filmed burning such as the Grenfell Tower fire in the UK.
Videoing a friend performing a parachute jump is possibley another.
A lone singer performing, or filming a striper performing, what's going on to the left or right of her is of little interest TBH why not use those wasted pixels and zoom in a bit closer ;-)

What happens when all those scenarios you mention get played back on a
widescreen system? It only makes sense for people who predominantly
watch videos on their telephone.

That is up to the firmware in the devices, make it black, white, grey, or have a fade type option which is what seems to happen
when I see such things on TV, but human eyes don't do that, but our brains adapt.

Well if I could send a signal to vap a student who is playing or using social media
on their phone while they are suposed to be doing a lab, then yes I'd love to see that as a feature controlled by me
remotely :-)

That was back in the 18th-20th centuries.

You won't find a blackboard or whiteboard in my lab, we have 2 visualizers that are connected to the 2nd PC monitor

Yes all our scopes are digital now, mostly the Keysight MSO-X 2002, MSO-X 2014 A , they all have inbuild signal generators too, and have 2 or 4 channels and 8 channel digital pods. We have a couple of the higher end models
MSO-X 3054A but keep them locked away.

The first year lab has the cheaper Gwinstek GDS-1052U scopoes.
