There's really not that much devastating destruction in the world's nuclear arsenal to have enough of a global effect to cause extinction. It's all just a bunch of hype to scare the urban people who think it's the end of the world when they don't have a Starbucks nearby. Also, reportedly, most of Russian targeting is against military assets that would cause them retaliatory harm, things like missile fields, military control centers, and strategic bomber bases. Although they do now have a cobalt bomb delivered by smart loitering torpedo. If they detonate that monster in NYC harbor, it will lethally poison everyone living on the east coast of U.S. in a matter of hours.. It's the U.S. that mainly targets big civilian population centers.

I doubt it very seriously. It is not a small package and the US
has loitering missiles. I am not sure how much validity I would
place in such claims by other nations, particulalry one that flew
analog guages and vacuum operated mechanisms in their jets for as
long as I can remember. And only recently has made a rather
rudimentary old school chip fab.

The prevaling winds head eastward out to sea there.

Huh? I am sure the Kremlin is targetted with huge oxygen stealing
bunker buster bombs by US and others. But "civilian population
centers"? Not so much. Such is war and there are reasons targtets
are hit and civillian casualties are in the "break a few eggs" realm.

Look at the WW II bombing of Dresden late in the war. Some say it
was not needed, but the analysis of the situation shows otherwise.
