Yes. I think you're right. Each time I go to
https://forbetterscience.com/ (which is often) I fear I'm going to see
mention of someone I know (I sort of know Carlos López Ortín, but only
very slightly). On the whole, though, the sort of people I know don't
rely a lot on gels or electron micrographs, which offer the best
opportunities for fraud detection to Elisabeth Bik and Leonid
Schneider. If someone fakes their kinetic data it's not usually obvious.

Unfortunately people only see what they want to see. The Sudbø scandal
happened too long ago to be discussed by Elisabeth or Leonid, but this
is a quotation of a letter I sent to The Biochemist a few years ago:

"On the 9th February 2006 the New England Journal of Medicine published
an editorial in which the following words appeared ‘In the issue of
April 26, 2001, we published a study by Jon Sudbø et al. Figure 3B and
3C of that article, which purports to represent two different patients
and stages of oral epithelial dysplasia, are in fact different
magnifications of the same photomicrograph.’ When I looked at the
original article myself, I was amazed to see that the fraud was
perfectly obvious even to someone with no expertise in microscopy." One
didn't need Elisabeth's forensic skills to notice that both of the
supposedly different electron micrographs had the same very obvious
feature resembling a goose's head.
"Yet for five years it apparently went unnoticed by referees, editors
and readers. Of course, if it had been a trivial paper of no importance
readers might have noticed the fraud but thought it not worth bothering
with, but this was a highly visible paper that had been cited about 140
times before the fraud was publicized."
