Bonobos are chimps.

"Chimp" isn't a species. There's Pan troglodytes and Pan
paniscus... though they are more commonly referred to
as "Chimps" and "Bonobo Chimps."

Some argue, quite compellingly, that even the "Pan" is
in error that they should be classified as Homo. Human.
A different species of human, yes, but human.

It would have been useful if they had also
compared with gorillas (and even orangs!).

I had a quick look for a physiological
comparison of chimps with gorillas and
found nothing useful. I suspect that
they are quite close -- much too close
for those who deny that the LCA of
chimp and homo was the chimp.

If anyone knows of such a comparison,
please post.

Bonobos are least changed physically from the common ancestor of orang/gorilla/chimp/bonobo/human, but they've changed too eg. Knucklewalking, faster brachiation, sex play, reduced pelage.

Note: Uniquely, humans and hylobatids have chins, drink water with cupped hands, and are obligate orthograde bipeds arborially and terrestrially.

Thanks, but I was really looking for the
same sort of stuff as in the nature paper
-- main limb, head and neck muscles, to
see what has been lost or gained.

I doubt if there were any major changes.
