Pfizer announced on Tuesday that an experimental RSV vaccine for pregnant women protects newborns against severe illness for at least six months after birth.

“The burden of the annual epidemic of RSV is huge from an emotional and resource perspective (estimated $2.6 billion annual costs). Any strategy that could make a significant impact to reducing that burden is greatly appreciated,” Chang said about the vaccine. “Even ‘only’ a 50% reduction out of 55,000-125,000 hospitalizations per year would be a significant relief to families and to the health care system.”

“After years of having to tell parents, ‘We just have to treat the symptoms and wait’ for their child to improve from their RSV infection, I welcome the day that I may never have to think about RSV again,” Chang said.

Vaccine induces immune response against viral fusion protein component. Mother's immunity produces the antibody response, and then transfuses them into the fetus.

It's a protein vaccine, more conventional, not an mRNA vaccine.
