China has pretty much wrapped this problem up in a day. The college student crowd is the main vocal group comprised of idiots too stupid to realize how stupid they are.

And the idea that "global" health experts, aka western health experts, should be criticizing China's policy for handling the epidemic is a joke. The virus shattered the west, nearly obliterating their health care systems for one thing, with some very long lasting damage. Back breaking record deficits, labor shortages and unrest, major supply chain disruptions, unemployment, and inflation, to name a few.

But, it's largely *over* in the West. The fat lady is waiting in the
wings, as far as China is concerned.

Right. They have created a huge virus-nutrient population.

So in addition to the lockdown damage, they still have to deal with
the virus some day when they unlock.

This is Pride and Politics.

Where are you getting these crazy ideas? China has administered nearly 3-1/2 billion doses of vaccine. To date there have been 30,000 deaths and 9.6 million confirmed cases, making the mortality no more than 0.03/9.6= 0.3% , which is about half that of the west ( assuming they got the confirmed deaths right). That is extraordinarily good performance considering the super high population density there. And the record is that any variant showing up thus far capable of evading a vaccination for the original strain results in very mild illness and only very rarely serious illness and death. The most effective preventative against disease is personal mask protection, that one is 100% effective and 100% enforced. Let China deal with running China, they don't need advice from westerners, most of whom come from COVID disaster areas.

Lol- in a pig's eye they did.

History is rife with insane megadeath murderers and their cronies who
gain absolute power by being purely vicious.

Napoleon, Hitler, Stalin, Mao, Hirohito, Idi Amin, Pol Pot, the Kims,
Putin, Xi are just a few recent examples.

Some pecularity of human behavior makes this happen.

Covid is now only killing people in the West at about the same sort of
rate (and demographic of people) as a normal winter flu season.

> The US wasn't one of them.

Neither was the UK but we did quite a good job with rapid vaccination
even if every lockdown was two or three weeks too late to do any good.
We had "The Boris" who was a bit like Trump but more erudite and well
read but very much a Party animal as his political demise showed.

It is stranger than that.
It is especially the elderly who are refusing the vaccination there.
Their vaccine isn't great but it is still better than nothing.

Even with the original wild strain you had to vaccinate >85% (according
to the Australian researchers). It looks to me like it is settling into
a dynamic equilibrium in the UK now with about 1 million people with
active Covid every week as a stable baseline. Waning immunity with time
providing new people ready for it to infect on a timescale of 6 months.

The shape of the bumps on the UK curve suggests maybe one more peak and
then it will settle down to a near steady state annual reinfection
pattern with some improvement in summer and a bit worse in winter.

That would cut their death rate by a further factor of 3 if they were
prepared to do it. And a factor of 2 more if they could persuade their
refuseniks to accept the vaccine. However, I don't see that happening.

Japan seems to have made a much better fist of it. They are still very
cautious though with masks required at indoor public mass gatherings.
NHK still broadcasts the "How to wash your hands video" with monotonous
regularity. Nicely filmed but if you haven't figured it out by now...

The French did something similar when Macron described the UK AZ vaccine
as "quasi ineffective".
National pride was at stake since the home grown French ones were both
useless.

Is that some moral failing, buying land? Napoleon's claim of ownership
was doubtful anyhow, as was the claim of any colonial power to owning
peopled territory because someone planted a flag.

Putin wants Alaska back.

States within the Louisiana Purchase joined by, among other things,
votes by Congress and with consent of the local elected legislature,
which was and is a novel process.
