I disagree with that assessment. China has done a remarkably good job managing the pandemic. The strains circulating there now are sub-lineages of Omicron, and are not that dangerous.

superstitious, and vaccine-skeptical as the tens of millions of
Americans like Mr. Larkin, who are the same way.

The leadership didn't seem to strongly believe even Chinese citizens
would be interested in getting shot with Chinese-manufactured vaccines
and that might have been a reasonable take, at the time.

power. Even Hitler didn't have absolute power.

They are supermanagerial states, the autocrat holds a lot of power but
are finally run day-to-day by upper-middle management, who wield a great
deal of power of their own.

people.

A release from the Wuhan virus institute was probably unintentional,
just sloppy lab management. Xi had nothing to gain.

The virus itself was probably created in the lab. We may never know.

They regularly do not. The Party tends to find face-saving ways to make
compromises with The People, but the idea that events like Tienanmen
Square and the more recent protests didn't scare them at all is silly.

They declare victory, privately they get the message and alter their
course somewhat, though the state media will naturally tend to say the
altered course was what was planned all along..
