I never heard of such a thing until I exchanged a few texts with my sister in law yesterday. I suppose thieves are really busy this time of year.

I took a simpler approach: filled a 1.5 cu ft unmarked box with
*sand* (in a sealed inner bag so there's no leakage to give away
the contents).

In hindsight, it would have been better to use an "Amazon" box!
Maybe next year.

Petty larceny is a low grade misdemeanor, one reason the police don't bother with it. You can up it to felony vandalism (prison time) by using one of those secure lockbox things.

My ladyfriend's residence got hit for the first time last week, the
thief snatched a box containing two pair Victoria's Secret thong
underwear right off the porch.

Hope they're satisfied with their "loot"

A neighbor had some really delightful "Santa & Mrs Claus" stuffed,
life size "dolls" (?) that they would pose on a bench on their
front porch.

Sadly, someone decided that THEY would much rather have these
"dolls". Likely not a neighbor as how could they ever *display*
them knowing that the original owner would likely see them? Or,
that some other neighbor might notice them (if displayed indoors)
and comment to the original owner: "Hey, Bob has some dolls just
like the ones YOU used to have!"

Another neighbor was the safety officer at a nearby hospital.
Had some radioactive "samples" (to test their detectors)
stored, overnight, in his car. Thief broke in, found the
fancy looking case -- and, apparently, abandoned it once he
saw the radiation hazard warning.
