It's the cold air, stupid. Cold air inhibits an otherwise very effective frontline innate immune response in the nasal passages that otherwise would have stopped invasive pathogens in their tracks. Wear a mask if you're infirm.

direct inhalation of viruses, but it’s also like wearing a sweater on your nose, rhinologist Dr. Benjamin Bleier said."

Never argue with a rhinologist. He's talking about a good mask.
