National Geographic often has stunning pictures. I encountered it
on FB and it took me a while to find a link to a good quality version.

Must be fake!

The sailor is wearing a safety belt - I'm sure you must have noticed, yes?

I don't see how the such basic safety precautions imply the image to be fake.

I dunno.. somehow I just love pictures with a visual pattern in both dark on light
background and light on dark background variations.

It's a great image, but I am not sure I understand how the effects arise
unless it has been photoshopped.

And once that is the case, maybe the "sun" has been added as well as the
annular red region where the rigging has become washed out. Interesting
that the sun has been cut off by the mast at the right, and the sailor
is not quite central in the sun. That might suggest that it's not a
composite. But I still think the rigging has been airbrushed out.

I just wish people would be honest about composite images, rather than
implying that they have incredible skill in getting components
positioned exactly right, and also correct exposure over the whole frame.

And I don't have a problem with a bit of artistic license, like removing
distractions such as power lines, or tweaking brightness, colour, or
contrast across the frame.

I do wonder why the area of the sun blocks out details
of the rigging of the ship.
It's hard to find images closely resembling it with a something silhouetted against
the setting or rising sun.
https://imgur.com/a/bsxadjU

I think the appearance of the sun can vary quite dramatically depending on
atmospheric conditions.

I see no obvious signs of image manipulation, but then again, I have little
experience with that.

http://fotoforensics.com/analysis.php?id=012786a26aca42ff05e0b3ef6096b7c6c7c80bf4.853951

I can just compare it to an image that I know to be manipulated.

I prefer the clear outlines of the figures in the NG picture. I think the outlines are the
whole point of silhouetting subjects, so then it's kind of critical to get the exposure
right to obtain crisp outlines. Perhaps it requires foggy weather to ensure the light
of the sun is somewhat attenuated.

It was taken from the shore through a spotting scope.

It is a frame from a movie I made from the stills. The last frame shows the green flash at sunset.

Oh well done! I had a perfect view of the "green flash" on holiday at
Carn Marth in Cornwall last year. I took the full kit out the next day
to try to do a time-lapse, but was foiled by cloud.
