Didn't know there was such a thing as a fuel cell phone charger:

"Some of the newest portable charging devices also run on hydrogen using miniature fuel cells. These nifty devices use special cartridges that react with the air or H20, right from your own water bottle, to produce electric current. Prices are a bit steeper than a battery-assisted charger, but the hydrogen fuel aspect is a definite novelty to consider as a great stocking stuffer.

For recommendations to save as much as 30% energy on charging devices, consider ENERGY STAR®‘s list of certified products, including rechargeable batteries (such as the AA kind) and chargers."

https://www.energy.gov/energysaver/articles/holiday-gifts-energy-efficiency

This is an advance, a smart power strip that automatically turns off when it detects a standby load:

"Incorporating a power strip into your home office or your entertainment centers are pretty easy, just make sure you’re on the hunt for a smart power strip! Traditional power strips house many different devices and use only one outlet, but remember, if devices are plugged in, they will continue to use energy. Smart power strips can actually cut power off and save energy since they are able to detect when a device is in standby mode. "

Lot of work to save milliwatts.

You obviously didn't see the info graphic:

https://www.nrel.gov/docs/fy14osti/60461.pdf

It's not just the one instance, but the many 10s of millions of instances that add up.

Fun cartoon!

We just threw away a Sony DVD player because its menus were
unmanagable. Just play the damned thing! I sure don't want a smart
programmable power strip complicating my life. A pushbutton circuit
breaker is my limit.

If you want your TV off, turn it off.

I helped a startup a few years ago, to design a smart power strip. It
had Zigbee comm, per-slot metering, per-slot shutdown. It worked fine
but nobody wanted to buy them.

The price of electricity round here is about 30 cents per kWh, about
half of which is charged for generation and half for transmission. (And
yes, it would be much less were it not for Andrew Cuomo and his
henchmen, some of whom are in jail and more should be.)

At that very high rate, $200 per year is an average load of about 76
watts, which seems pretty high for an average.

I'm pretty sure that the electronics round our house suck quite a bit
less than that, but I'll pull out my Kill-A-Watt and find out.

Cheers

Yes. Some things reboot if you actually power cycle them. Some reload
code off the web, which can take a while.

And, other combinations; in order to receive remote control signals, modern TVs have a standby power
(and to get quick warm-up, older ones also kept filaments hot on standby), BUT a few have an irritating
boot-up sequence every time they go from standby to ON.

It's a nuisance, too, that the remote-control's standby supply is necessary to turn everything else on.
My stereo never woke properly from glitchy-power-trees-on-lines snow week, and the backtracking
from power-missing regions to the remote control sensor is very awkward.

Our cable box reloads its code after a power cycle. It takes 5 minutes
or so.

Comcast thing. Mo likes TV and it get us internet service. The only
options here are AT&T (yuk!) and a MonkeyBrains dish. I get 120+40
Mbits and it's been very reliable. Free POTS too.

Standby averages 1.3W (most common was 0.5W):

That's less than $3 a year if electricity is $0.30/kWh.
