Certainly more foreground is sharp that necessary, but moving that back

Actually, the title of the post reffered to my inability to get eyes in
focus. I wasn't aiming for DoF.

Did you read the EOS 6D mark ii manual regarding how to let the camera know what part of
the image you would like to be in focus?
The camera is not magically going to know what part of the image you'd prefer to be sharp.

I don't know what you're talking about. The camera doesn't know anything.
I aim it, focus it and press the button.

The last time I used a macro lens was quite a while ago, so maybe I just
need some practice. The SP90 2.5 is generally regarded as a good lens, so
worth persisting.

PS: My camera has a manual? Whatever for?

Uh, you’ve been answering that question from the start of this thread.

How can you expect decent pictures if you're clueless about operating the camera?

Here is the manual.. read all the parts related to focusing (AF=Auto Focus).
http://gdlp01.c-wss.com/gds/9/0300027469/01/eos6d-mk2-im-en.pdf

In particular page 313
https://i.imgur.com/1A5ZyLX.png

It shows you how you can customize a particular spot in the image you want to focus on.

I know perfectly well how to work the camera and don't need a stupid
manual.

You might like to think about the lens I'm using. Not all of us use fancy
motorised lenses.

I have many lenses and only one has auto focus.

I'm starting to remember why I stopped coming here. Do you actually have
a camera?

Bye then.

Maybe just a matter of more practice then, judging from other pictures taken

Yup.

Definitely a capable lens. Crap operator.

Hence the title of the post.

FWIW I wasn't trying to get the whole thing in focus - just its head and
scary arms. I was 100% convinced that I had the eyes in perfect focus.
Maybe it's my age. Not seeing as well as I might like.

That’s an odd response. You were half joking, so was I. I see you mentioned
the lens is MF. But doesn’t the focus confirmation work? That can work
better than your eyes, along with telling you exactly where it’s focusing.
I believe there are also settings regarding how small the spot focus area is,
which might affect the focus confirmation.

What steps have you taken that for these closeups you have the camera
viewfinder diopter set correctly or that your lens isn't front or back
focusing? There are many focus test sheets and procedures available to
test your lens' focus.

It does have an aftermarket chip glued in there and does indeed beep when
the lens is open enough.

I think this has more to do with unsteady hands and the fact that I was
holding the camera at arm's length and actually moving the camera to
focus rather than the focus ring.

I think I'm just not very good at macro work. Not steady enough.

Praps I'll try upping the shutter speed and iso.

How about live view with focus peaking enabled? That also uses contrast
detect which I believe is more accurate, but slower.

Almost certainly would produce better results, but this was an
apportunistic shoot on my patio and I had to get in and out before the
cats noticed.

My favourite models are goats:

I've adjusted the thing by the eyepiece. I do have one AF lens - a Sigma
