Japan Pledges to Find Remains of Iwo Jima Dead

Japan has vowed to locate the remains of an estimated 12,000 troops still missing since the Battle of Iwo Jima.

https://www.history.com/news/japan-pledges-to-find-remains-of-iwo-jima-dead

Wiki article says:

"Iwo Jima was considered strategically important since it provided an air base for Japanese fighter planes to intercept long-range B-29 Superfortress bombers. In addition, it was used by the Japanese to stage nuisance air attacks on the Mariana Islands from November 1944 to January 1945."

We know now that is total bullshit since the B-29 flew at altitudes 15,000 feet above the operational ceiling of the Zero, putting them out of reach. The Japanese later developed an upgrade near the end of the war, but because they were taking such a beating from the B-29's, they could only produce a handful.

"The action was controversial, with retired Chief of Naval Operations William V. Pratt stating that the island was useless to the Army as a staging base and useless to the Navy as a fleet base."
