Probably not: they originally lived in coastal forests,
different branches evolved to live inland along bais, lakes etc.,
e.g. google "gorilla bai" or "aquarboreal ancestors" etc.

BTW, I still don't know who coined the word "aquarboreal".

That word isn't in the dictionary, maybe not "coined' nor credited yet?
