According to the prevailing theory, the Milankovitch theory of the astronomical cause of the Ice Age, we are soon headed back to another Ice Age thanks to several orbital parameters: obliquity, perihelion advance, and ellipticity of Earth's orbit. Unfortunately, these all balance out within one year, making it difficult for a trend to develop from one year to the next. Croll knew this, so Milankovitch suggested the key was the summer temperatures at about 65 degrees north where there is the most land extent. Ice albedo feedback was to somehow result in an accumulation of more ice. This silly idea is still passing for science thanks to Milankovitch's herculean mathematics and the need to have an explanation of the cause of Agassiz's extrapolations.

The Gulf Stream supposedly flowed further south during the Ice Age, but better scientists argue against that. I have a couple of professional experts articles on that.
