Lorentz transformations were meant to account for the lack of an ether wind (Lorentz understood them to account for the null result of the MMX). Since Einstein did not have an ether, why would he want them? Adopting the second postulate would require different calculations. How do his calculations differ from Lorentz's? They are really virtually identical, aren't they?

In the 1920's he said the aether was absolutely necessary as it was his space time immaterial physics.
