I honestly can't see how Neanderthals could be only one thing.

What I think happened was that periodic disasters (Super volcanoes, asteroids,
etc) favored coastal populations, populations adapted to the water resources.

During a sudden volcanic winter -- or "Nuclear winter" from a large asteroid --
the coast is the safest place to be, providing that you're not in the way of any
tsunamis.

The sea moderates climate, sea food is vastly more stable. Reindeer aren't
going to last more than a couple of weeks, tops, after a sudden drop in
temperature and a loss of food...

What I'm saying is that inland hunter-foragers are easily going to starve while
coastal populations might have difficulty dealing with the cold but at least
they can eat...

Toba probably ended summers in the northern hemisphere for at least 10
years. At least. It probably took more than a thousand years for the climate
to fully recover...

The Younger Dryas cooling lasted, what? Something like 1,200 years? And it
is believed by all outside of NOAA to have been caused by an object from
space, an asteroid or comet, impacting us. NOAA, on the other hand, clings to
some largely disproven "Ice Dam" theory.
