Given the renewed interest here in Hilbert's infinite hotel, I thought readers would be interested in a more intuitive, somewhat less mind-blowing alternative. Hilbert's Hotel is just a thought experiment to get a handle on the notion of an infinite set. (See: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hilbert%27s_paradox_of_the_Grand_Hotel ) It starts with some other-worldly madness in an hotel with infinitely many rooms and guests. Hmmm...

I have suggested another thought experiment, something a little more intuitive and calming: a leisurely walk through a small, very ordinary village. From a mathematical analysis of all possible such walks, we develop a non-numerical definition of a finite set. Then, of course, an infinite set (consistent with Dedekind's definitions) will then be one that is simply not finite.
