Driving north on Hwy 97 through central Oregon, the first thing you notice is the vast emptiness of the land in every direction. It is an ocean of barren landforms. This is not at all the case with WA’s central section, which is covered in crops; the very crops that feed so many Chinese mouths. The reason for this is that the Oregon desert is just too damned high, and so, too cold for successful agriculture. But cattle can still survive there.

My objective this day was the small town of Goldendale WA, ten miles north of the Columbia River. I had made a pilgrimage there 20 years earlier and had hoped to do so again. I didn't reach the Columbia until well after dark. I crossed over the 4th largest river in the US well after dark, still intent on getting there to pay my respects. I quailed just a mile past the river. It was pitch dark and would be so at my destination. Recalling the attempt on my life from a few weeks earlier (many readers will remember my lug nuts and studs incident whilst attending a loud party near Seattle) I was concerned that the relativity mafia might avail themselves of the cover of darkness to make a second attempt. And what better place than the very location where General Relativity was first falsified, Goldendale, WA….
