Ancestral human/hominen head hair is
most unusual. It could be called
'extraordinary'. No other mammal has
anything like it. So what's it for?

Two reasons for it have been proposed:
A) Insulation of the head & brain against
the heat of the sun;
B) Insulation of the head & brain against
cold -- when swimming in the sea.

I suggest we can rule out (A) insulation
against the sun. We all know what it
takes to protect one's head here -- wear
a hat, ideally a wide-brimmed one that
will also protect the shoulders.

A layer of good hair (not an Afro) will
usually be adequate for the head. There
is no need for anything the size of an
Afro.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Billy_Preston.jpg

Our ancestors have been capable of
making hats, or some kind of head
covering, for at least a few hundred
thousand years. The material for this
kind of straw hat is ubiquitous.

https://www.123rf.com/photo_11884808_straw-hat-isolated.html

So it's insulation of the brain against
cold -- unless someone can come up
with a better idea.

How when and why would Afro hair
have derived from some other kind

The above is accurate and intelligently put forth if 'Ancestral' is replaced only with "African".
Hominin hair was most like hominoid hair.

Coiled hair is unique, derived from typical hominoid hair, under selection for sun protection (skin, eyes) with ventilation enabling scalp cooling via eccrine sweat, advantageous in tropics, not in temperate nor sub-arctic zones.

The below is near-imbecile level thinking that no comment can repair.

So what's it for?
