They make it sound like depressurization allows soil contaminants to permeate undamaged piping. I find that hard to believe. Potable water is not the gravity driven sewer. What must be happening upon depressurization is contaminated water at higher elevation flows into lower elevation parts of the system, and the process is sped up if the lower elevation components are opened up or fractured.

They're still learning new things about water distribution contamination, mainly due to the components of the synthetic water pipe materials. Let's hope they've learned more about water distribution decontamination. Looks like the whole water distribution in the burned out areas needs replacing. Even after replacement, a system of water toxicity testing will have to be in place for some time, and then there's the overhead of supplying potable water to the surviving population. This will cost a pretty penny.

Knowledge makes life more complicated.
