Heavy water is not radioactive. The place had been making thorium
mantles and radioactive toothpaste long before WWII.

says that the Oranienburg plant was mainly involved in the production of uranium metal , which is . There weren't any nuclear reactions going on, so it wasn't all that radioactive.

So, like a lot of other stuff they did, the bombing was a total waste of time.

Right, the German scientific establishment that studied the area said radiation wasn't a problem until the bombing. As for the heavy water, would it make sense they would have radioactive material stored in tanks shielded with heavy water? It may not be the best possible shield, but Germany was resource starved at the time. The people interviewed in the one documentary I watched stated it was the bombing of the "heavy water tanks" that dispersed the radiation.
