The Ukrainians are fighting their war against Russia for perfectly sound reasons. They didn't start the war, and the Americans would be perfectly happy if they negotiated an acceptable peace with Russia. Europe isn't in the least happy with having to cope with a bunch of Ukrainian refugees from Russia's invasion and are supporting the the Ukraine in the hope that the Russians will eventually lose interest and the refugees can go home.

America is being a good ally of Europe and adding their support. Nobody is in the least fond of Putin, who has assassinated people he doesn't like in Europe and the UK and killed innocent bystanders in the process.

Calling it a "proxy war" promotes this distaste to the point where it the main motivation, rather than an incidental additional motivation to do the right thing.
