Crocs in pools near near river crossing
Wolves/lions in shrubbery along river crossing
Homo with spears in climbable riverside trees
Vultures flying above show where/when the herds are crossing

The herd goes through the gauntlet, gets through but always loses some members. The predators eat.

Repeat but substitute spawning salmon for herds and bears for Crocs.

Bears at pools near river crossing
Wolves hide along river crossing
Homo with spears/harpoons on banks or perch poles or climbable riverside trees
Eagles flying above show where/when the salmon are spawning

The salmon get through the gauntlet but loses some members. The predators eat.
