So you'd need 2 things rather than one.

I do.

If you rephrase the question and ask which is best an iphone SE and using 3rd party software enhancemeant
or buying a new iPhone 14, would be a more valid question.
But it would also depend on whether you use you present iPhone for anything other than photography,
so the anser might be buy a proper camera NOT an iPhone.

Actually Olympus have been using computational photography in their
cameras for a long time already.

I take your point. I'd be a bit lost without a 'phone nowadays!

So a camera-and-phone all-in-one is my best bet. Thanks.

Which carrier are you on? There have been issues with Verizon and the
iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max U.S. models that appear to be
addressed with the iOS 16.1 Beta 4 update which supposedly has updated
firmware for the Qualcomm X65 5G modem. The problem is related to mmWave
5G on Verizon.

I installed iOS 16.1 Beta 4 on my iPhone Xr but I didn't get the
expected battery percentage number.

Perhaps you shouldn't be experimenting with Beta releases, just wait for
the public upgrade.

No issue then. The UK iPhone 14 models do not support mmWave 5G which
has, apparently, been the cause of problems in the U.S., mainly on
Verizon but to a lesser extent on other carriers (T-Mobile, AT&T, and
U.S. Cellular), see

Not much actually. A 13 years old micro 4/3 camera with an ancient 12MP
sensor still beats the iphone 14:

When you look at the other phone cameras they’ve reviewed, it’s a rubbish
selection, no mention of probably the best 2 camera phones on the market
the Sony Experian 1 Iv and the Samsung S22

I do take your point. :-)

Do you recommend buying old cameras rather than new? If so, HOW old
would you suggest? Can you spot anything interesting on the UK Ebay
site, for instance?

If you don't need 40+ MP and 16MP are enough, you could buy a used
Olympus E-M10 with the kit lens. Great value and you have the option of
adding dedicated lenses (i.e. macro, ultrawide, tele etc) later. Much
better than spending over 1000 Euro on an overpriced iphone.

Although I have a Panasonic rather than Olympus camera body, I can highly
recommend the Olympus macro (good working distance), 8-16 mm zoom wide-angle
(16-32 mm equivalent), and 8 mm "body cap" fisheye wide-angle MFT lenses.

I must confess that these days I use the Google Pixel 6 Pro phone much more
than the "big" camera.

I have a Panasonic GM5 with the Olympus bodycap lens, and unlike
many a smartphone it fits in any of my shirt pockets and I don't
even feel it's there! The lens has 140 degrees angle of view
(equivalent to a 14mm lens in 35mm terms when defished) and is
good enough to enlarge to A3 size with a bit of unsharp masking at
the corners.

My whole kit (fisheye plus OM 9-18mm & Pana 45-150mm zooms, equiv
to 18-36mm & 90-300mm) weighs about 600g, which may be more than a
smartphone but is less than just my 70-200/f2.8 zoom weighed in my
35mm days!

I've tried the Olympus E-M10 too, the quality is better and it has
good IBIS but it simply won't fit in anything smaller than a coat
pocket even with the bodycap lens attached!

What's this about a loose nut - at first I thought you meant PEBKAC?

true & much more convient than my lens of 105mm diameter, 260mm long and 1.8KG
but I doubt you'll get a good moonshot with an SE,or even an iPhone14.
