Strange how every new discovery suggests the need for more research in the area to keep the scientists who make the discovery gainfully employed.

As for the significance of the discovery, it as be summarised as "protists are strange". When the regular phyla (animals, plants fungi) split off the protists had made other choices that hadn't worked out as well - great for some ecological niches, but mostly not niches where any organism can do well.
