There's also a MASSIVE selection bias. They dig where it's both
easy to dig and the conditions favor fossilization, AND THEN
assume anything they pull out of the ground is representative
of human ancestry.

I've been pointing to the Glacial/Interglacial cycle for 10 hundred
gazillion years: Lengthy glacial periods punctuated by much
briefer interglacials, like the one screaming towards an end right
now. During glacial periods -- i.e. most of the time -- sea levals
were much lower and the coast was further out. So the best
place to look for our ancestors is actually beneath the waves.

Nobody is searching for our common ancestors, they're all
looking for inland populations. Some of the inland populations
may have living descendants, all the inland populations may have
living descendants but none of them are common to everyone.

Only the Aquatic Ape/waterside population is common to everyone.

All hominoids are mostly vertical upright bipedal in forest trees, and on forest ground when impeded by carrying or walking in water or thick brush. Leaving the forests for open plains or open water did not select for or against bipedalism in hominoids nor in avians. LCA HPG and LCA HP most likely lived near or in Africa. Humans did not leave the forest, but brought it with them in the form of forest products and still remain dependent upon them. All people of treeless plains and and coastal shores and deserts used wood for shelters, tools and weapons.

Chimps are descended from upright walkers, not knuckle walkers, and
Gorillas probably were as well. Their knuckle walking is an adaptation
to the forests which only arose sometime after they diverged from the
human line.

The mostly likely scenario is that competition from the human side of
the family drove them to a new niche or, as I content, drove them from
a more generalist existence to a specialist niche.

Wrong, sedges are a "fallback food" which are too 'fibrous' for their normal diet. They do eat high-protein hydrocharis, a "preferred food" year around, in forest bais, as I recently posted here, they mostly sit while finger-raking it, and locomote both quadrupedally and bipedally, whereas in trees they don't locomote quadrupedally. Study a bit, you might learn something about real apes.

for the LCA.

Chimps including Bonobo Chimps descend from upright walkers. They've
been evolving AWAY from that ever since.
