I wonder if google has abandoned usenet, previous spam storms usually stopped in a day or two

Do you know if there is a way to filter using a wile card ? (*)

I don't see anything about it in Agent 8 help but I do se some logic
like AND and NOT etc.

Maybe Google or ChatGPT has some answers.

Seems that sporge is extremely hard to filter.

Or maybe there is a way to approve certain from: names ?
That might be handy.

Depends on your newsreader. Mine (slrn) allows regex matches (which
are, if I understand the documentation correctly, relatively closely
compatible to PCRE)

Quick spin thru the (awful) FAQ seems like "no".

Really depends on what limitations your newsreader has ... I couldn't
find much in the way of useful documentation for "(Forte) Agent8"; seems
it's more geared towards obtaining binaries rather than general
communication of "news".

Agent has a complex filter command syntax, regular expressions and
such, that I don't have the energy to understand and use.

It may be possible to op-in some google posts, based on poster's name,
but I don't know how.

I use XNEWS and a PLONK file. I see very little new spam.

There are 349 entries in my PLONK file, but most of them are years old. I
should clean them out by erasing the file and starting over.

I have tried most of the news clients and soon gave up on them. I am very
happy with XNEWS

I spam reported over a 1,000 of those things from within google groups, they went back as far as mid-November. Google makes it real easy to do a group spam report for each 30-line page. You just select the whole page and then de-select the very small number of real posts, usually none, on the page. Then press report symbol. I thought it would clean up the display but it didn't. In place of the spam post they have an italicized message about why the post is hidden, so the display is still a wasteland.

Also inadvertently discovered Google won't allow me to report my own post as spam. Must cause their report collection bot to flip out.

Sadly, both John Larkin and "a a" appear to be real. "Real" doesn't mean
constructive, well-informed or useful.

A decent newsreader will allow you to do exactly this. Note, I don't
know if ForteAgent has any of this, as I don't use it.

A deceent newsreader implements "kill files" not as a binary
"kill/keep" filter but rather as a scoring filter. New articles start
out with an initial score (say zero points) and any "kill filters" they
trigger subtract points, and any "select filters" they trigger add
points. The net points value after all the matching kill/select
filters have triggered then determines whether you see the article
highlighted to draw your attention, as a normal new post, or hidden
because you don't want to see it.

So what you would do is add a general kill filter on the google groups
User-Agent header, initially subtracting points from everything from
google groups and hiding everything from google groups.

Then you would add explicit "keep" (select) filters for user names
(From: headers) for users from google groups that you do want to see,
which would then "undo" the killing done by the general kill filter,
but just for those users for which you added the explicit filters.

The disadvantage is you have to already know which users you want to
see and/or be on the lookout for others quoting users you did not see,
and updating your rules to "expose" those users to your view.

eastern languages, although today was Roman alphabet. SED and RCM have

It depends on the provider.
I tried the 'paid' KPN.nl (comes with my internet connection) which passes all spam.
Now I use the free provider news.eternal-september.org which removes all the spam.
Maybe also everything else posted through google groups - mostly clueless stuff anyway.

This ought to be possible if one puts a white list rule (that also
stops further rule processing) before the kill google groups filter.

My google groups is almost all spam per page, with maybe 0-3 real posts. Each page is 30 posts. So it's much easier to select the whole page and then deselect the 0-3 real posts. You hit the report spam icon, and the whole selected bunch gets reported at one time. It seems to be working, I didn't see a one new post of that garbage I reported yesterday. There were about 60 brand new spam authors today, and they were all reported the same way. It takes under a minute to get rid of that many.
