It is supposed to vary with cosmic ray activity, rather than solar activity - cosmic rays are more energetic than the high energy particles emitted by the sun.

It's got quite a lot to offer some sciences. Some exercises in reasoning take too much computation to be done reliably in human brains.
The solution to the protein folding problem came from artificial intelligence, and was real advance in biochemistry.
