We got an xray machine for QC solder inspection so I had people xray
some parts for me.

Center pin is common for most of the circuit, both end pins are heavily decoupled, a small chip is visible, and a single winding inductor is present. With those components in that configuration there is not much other choice. So I assumed an LM78xx replacement, which is readily available. I just never saw the insides, but everything matched the pin out and the idea. And 50 years of experience helps.

Thanks for that. If John can confirm that this is the same size as a
TO-220 package, that'll be good enough for me.

It's a VASD1 dc/dc with one bent pin.

Lately I use the surface-mount parts, like the PDS1 or the drop-in
compatible Murata. The Murata has the ferrite core buried inside the
PCB and the windings are all pcb traces and vias. Isolation
capacitance is very low compared to wire-wound transformers.

The wirewound parts seem to get their isolation voltage rating mostly
from the enamel on the wires.

I'll ask, but I know they use it to inspect soldering on BGAs and to
check for voiding on DPAK and power-pad parts. I think it's more a
process check than a thing to inspect evey board.

A contract assembler near us went out of business (contract assembly
makes no sense in San Francisco) so we got a bunch of their equipment
and three very good employees. The x-ray was part of the deal. I love
it.

I can xray parts for anyone that sends them to us.

I was diasppointed with the wimpy source wire bonds of some of the RF
phemts. That's not in my Spice model. I has to add a *500 ohm* series
gate resistor to my latest Colpitts oscillator to kill the GHz
squealing.

What's weird (well, until I really thought about it) is that series
gate resistance increases oscillation amplitude in a source-follower
Colpitts.
