Preparing my final documents (statement of purpose, ciriculum vitae, etc.) for applications to master's programs in linguistics.
I hope to focus in historical linguistics, while refining my interest around Latin or ancient languages (PIE or Paleo-European).

As linguists with undoubtedly much experience in academia, how might I make myself stand out among other applicants?
If any of you are professors, what do you look for in a prospective student?

Any other advice or wisdom is appreciated. Univeristy of Edinburgh is my current hope.

Maybe you should be aware that objective criteria like competences, published papers, etc might not be the only criteria involved in selecting candidates. Being a buddy of some VIP, licking boots or sucking dicks might also be practical criteria.
In the meantime, you may work and bet on publishing papers in reputable venues.
