Notably, natural life of some of those trees is hundreds to thousands of years,
and they do NOT always decompose, as we know: lots of coal used to
be forests. Dead, yes, but still carbon that's not in circulation.

The 'just plant trees' approach is flawed because there's no certainty of what
trees will prosper in our changing climate, nor security over the decades
against the attraction of (illegal or legal) harvest. There have been folk arrested
here for poaching trees... a big 'un might be worth a year's wages.
