"Atkinson also hypothesized that languages with the most sounds would
be the oldest, while those spoken by smaller breakaway groups would
utilize fewer sounds as variation and complexity diminished."

Easily disproven by the fact that Proto-IE had only two vowel phonemes
/e/ and /o/, whereas IE languages like German and English have
decades.

I believe we dealt with it a decade ago, when it was published.

Another disadvantage of on-line "research": you're likely not to notice
the dates of publication.

It was posted in a translator's mailing list. I already had my doubts.
Or I'm starting to get senile.

The date is in the link, and at the top of the article. And I don't do
research. I'm a writer (and a programmer), not a scientist.

I think the last time this came up I already pointed to the
well-reasoned opposite opinion expressed by Piotr Gąsiorowski:

"Too Many to Communicate"
https://langevo.blogspot.com/2013/04/too-many-to-communicate.html

He concludes that "[w]e have always been multilingual."

I don't have an opinion either way; I think we're still at a stage
where this is unknowable.

Yes but I'm sure it's reasonable to classify a "single language origin"
of mankind in the same map of oddities such as the "single cell origin"
of life and the "single individual origin" of any species, say, of mankind.

And by the time man left Africa (how many times?) there should have been
around already a panoply of non- or hardly related idioms.

Yes, the evolution of human language is a living process that began when the tetrapods left the sea with lungs and airtubes and continues today.

True. Such a pity though that the details of that evolution you refuse
