Something similar is used on the "50 MP" sensors of some mobile phones,
producing an improved (less than 50 MP) image.

Well no, these phones have real 50MP, 64MP or more sensors, which are
downsampled to 12 or 16 MP. But the Olympus camera is getting from 20MP
to 50 or 80 MP with pixel-shift.

I understand that Google Pixel phones use the pixel shift as well, although not
offering the greater number of pixels in the saved image. I wold need to check
the details.
