If you really honestly want to know the motivation, then you must go to psychology for the true answer lies there.

When old men in mathematics reach a certain age and they get ants in the pants about the fact they are not noteworthy other than their teaching career.. These fatheads are never satisfied with being a good teacher, no, they want fame and glory, but their 1/2 marble brain intelligence is never able to deliver something new in mathematics, new true and worthwhile. Still, they shoot for the stars of glory and money and fame, much like Andrew Wiles, Thomas Hales, Terry Tao and many others today.

So, well, they look at each rock of mathematics, lifting it up a ways hoping a salamander of fame and glory lies below that rock. And so they look at geometry axioms, hoping a salamander lies in those axioms for which their pea-marble brain of logical intelligence will turn them from a good teacher into being a fame and glory half runt, asked to appear on TV shows and awarded prizes and have a building named after you at Oxford University.

In the meantime, none of these fame seekers have the intelligence to admit slant cut of cone is not a ellipse but a Oval. None can do a geometry proof of Calculus fundamental theorem, no, all these goonclod fame seekers know is --- where can I foist some goonclod ideas to win fame and fortune.
