In a way one might say that epicycles are less elegant/beautiful than elliptical orbits, as a mathematical way to account for observed movements of heavenly bodies. So that might provide a motivation to accept the unintuitive assumption that planets revolve around the sun, in favor of the assumption that planets revolve around the earth.
