786 = bismillah? blessings?

That is 786 AD not AH but it is a possible reason.

This 786 has been a curiosity.

As it appears that you may be widely read on Islamic history can you recommend sources to learn more.

786 is not about history, it is about Abjad calculation. In Arabic each letter has a numerical value. Number 786 is the equivalant value of “Besmele” meaning “In the name of God who protects and forgives”. it is most repeated phrase in Quran and it is probably the most repeated phrase in the world.

It is the numbers version of Bismillah. Which muslims say before starting everything. It means; In the name of God.

It really is the actual explanation.

We would like to start everything we write with ‘bismillah’.. But inscribing these sacred words on paper would mean they run the risk of getting desecrated later. (Monthly budget of your household jotted down on a piece of paper will not be handled the same way once its utility wanes).. But we do want God’s blessings on our monthly finances, homework, love-letters, whatever.

So, writing ‘786’ is a way-around. If every Arabic alphabet in the expression ‘bismillah’ is assigned a corresponding number, and you add those numbers, you get 786.
