Perhaps the demand for cheaper models has shrunk so much, it's no longer
worthwhile to develop them?

That's it in a nutshell. Indeed the higher end camera market has been
driven in good part by Vloggers needing to make high quality _video_
rather than photos. They in turn influence what people want (rather
than need).

At the low end, everyone has a smartphone that takes very good photos in
most situations.

That's a pity. I would love to see a successor of the Panasonic GM-5.
Great, tiny little camera which takes all m4/3 lenses.

I am even more screwed with Sony. All my "Minolta" era lenses
(including 1 made by Sony) need an adaptor to work with newer Sony
"Alpha" cameras. And those good Sony Alpha cameras are quite expensive.
