My wife's 6T automatically started an update this morning.

She kept screaming I have been hacked but it looked like it was either updating or a factoy reset.

Anyway, neither of us can now get in.

She want to clear it back to factory defaults.

This needs one to log in first.

Normally, the 4-digit code is entered and a tick character is pressed.

There is no tick character!

In addition the finger or thumb image doesn't react at all.

Is there a way to at least get it going even if all contents are lost?

From searching online, you can:

- Press and hold simultaneously the Volume Down and Power buttons.
- When the OnePlus logo appears and the phone vibrates, release the
Power button *but* keep holding down the Volume Down button.
- Enter password, and tap OK button. (*)
- Tap English.
- Tap "Reset everything".
- Tap "This can not be undone, continue?"
- Tap Reboot to restart the phone.

(*) Is it the OK button that you're calling the "tick character"?

From https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l6Y1-2uUyO4, the video author never
had to enter a password.

From https://youtu.be/KXEhdQN_CXU?t=48, the video author got prompted
for a password, but could tap on "Forgot Password" to continue to the
factor reset (which is going to kill any passwords, anyway). From
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p-OtOYRzca8, and also from
https://youtu.be/GbSNpArNFZM?t=108, those authors do the same thing: tap
on "Forgot password".

Have you tried powering down the phone, and powering back up?
