Does it save my phone battery if I listen through earbuds instead of the
phone's speaker(s)?

Maybe, but probably not worth it for whatever small reward you might gain.
Plug-in analog headphones would be driven with less power than the speaker
so it would be a minute saving. If the headphones are digital, fed from a
USB-C then I wouldn't venture a guess. If the headphones are Bluetooth then
the added battery load to power that would probably negate the savings a
bit and then you'd just be running down the batteries in the headphones
which wouldn't gain you much, if anything.

Is your phone battery life really that bad? If so, does your version of the
OS have a battery-save mode and have you killed off all of those background
apps we never think about?

More energy is required to pump the sound from the smartphone to your ears
than from the earbuds to your ears.

Is the app using too much energy with the earbuds connected?

Android 11 > Battery > USAGE DETAILS > BATTERY USAGE SINCE FULL CHARGE

Shows a list of all apps' battery usage.

Should be easy to see...

No, nor is the speaker afaik but I'm planning ahead. (I also wish that
cordless phones had on/off switches so they could go a week or 2 without
needing to be recharged.)

Huh? I can switch off my cordless phones by pressing-and-holding the
hangup-button (red telephone button). Switch it back on with the same
procedure.

Yes, 'phones', plural: Several brands and generations, probably
spanning a few decades.

In Android, you hold the power button down and options pop up, to
"restart" or "shut down". Shutting down uses a tiny fraction of the energy
just turning off the screen uses. You don't get calls or notifications of
any sort when it's off.

Nowadays, most devices still consume some energy when turned off. My Chinese
made QIDI 3D printer is an exception to that, it has a physical on-off rocker
switch to turn it on/off.

Are you talking about a cordless phone or a cell phone?

Strange! You probably should (get and) read the manual to see what it
says about this.

Well, I obviously mean the colour of the icons *on* the buttons, The
buttons themselves have other colours (grey and white for my cordless
phones).

> Are you talking about a cordless phone or a cell phone?

Because you said "cordless phones", I'm talking about cordless phones
as well. I.e. phones which you use on a 'landline', often called a
'fixed phone'. Specifically phones using the DECT technology to
communicate between the cordless (cable-less) handset and the
base-station.

If you can find its model number, you can probably find its manual
on the web.

I have read the manual, and I read most of it again 5 or 10 years later,
which was maybe 5 years ago. I did find new things in the manual, but
in this case, I pressed the Hangup button and the light went on on the
cordless extension, and it stayed on as long as I held the button. So I
concluded the phone was still on.

There are 63 occurrences of the word "off", but they are about turning
the ringer off, the answering machine off, mute off, autotalk off,
