Mezmure Dawit: The Amharic Psalms of David
Mezmure Dawit (መዝሙረ ዳዊት) is the name given to the collection of 150 psalms that are part of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church's liturgy and scripture. The psalms are attributed to King David, the legendary ruler of Israel and ancestor of Jesus Christ. They express various themes such as praise, thanksgiving, lamentation, repentance, and prophecy.

The psalms are written in Amharic (አማርኛ), the official language of Ethiopia and one of the oldest Semitic languages in the world. Amharic is written using a unique script called Ge'ez (ግዕዝ), which has 33 basic consonants and seven vowel modifications. The Ge'ez script is also used for other Ethiopian languages such as Tigrinya and Tigre.

The psalms are divided into five books, each ending with a doxology or a hymn of praise. The first book contains psalms 1-41, the second book contains psalms 42-72, the third book contains psalms 73-89, the fourth book contains psalms 90-106, and the fifth book contains psalms 107-150. Some of the most famous psalms include Psalm 23 ("The Lord is my shepherd"), Psalm 51 ("Have mercy on me, O God"), Psalm 91 ("He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High"), and Psalm 150 ("Praise the Lord").

The psalms are recited or sung by Ethiopian Orthodox Christians during various occasions such as daily prayers, weekly services, festivals, and sacraments. They are also used as a source of inspiration, comfort, and guidance for believers. The psalms are considered to be the word of God and a reflection of His love and mercy.

One way to access the Mezmure Dawit is through a PDF file that contains the Amharic text and an English translation. The PDF file can be downloaded from this website, which also provides more information about the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church and its teachings. The PDF file is based on a manuscript of the Haile Selassie Bible, which is a version of the Ethiopian Bible that was commissioned by Emperor Haile Selassie I in 1961.

Another way to access the Mezmure Dawit is through an online platform that allows users to read, listen, and share the psalms in Amharic. The platform can be accessed from this website, which also provides audio recordings of the psalms and other books of the Ethiopian Bible. The website uses a transliteration system that converts the Ge'ez script into Latin characters for easier reading.

The Mezmure Dawit is a rich and beautiful collection of poems that reveal the heart and mind of King David and his relationship with God. It is also a treasure of Ethiopian culture and spirituality that can be enjoyed by anyone who appreciates poetry and faith.

The Mezmure Dawit is not only a collection of psalms, but also a musical tradition that dates back to the ancient times. The psalms are sung in various modes or melodies, each with its own mood and meaning. The modes are named after the notes of the Ethiopian musical scale, which are: Zilzil (ዝልዝል), Genet (ገነት), Ezel (እዘል), Ararai (አራራይ), Ambassel (አምባሰል), Bati (ባቲ), and Anchihoye (አንጺሆዬ). The modes are also associated with different times of the day, seasons of the year, and liturgical occasions.

The Mezmure Dawit is performed by a choir of singers and instrumentalists, who use various types of drums, sistrums, harps, flutes, and trumpets. The choir is led by a cantor or a master singer, who initiates the psalm and sets the mode and tempo. The choir responds with a refrain or an antiphon, which is usually a short phrase or a word that summarizes the main theme of the psalm. The cantor and the choir alternate between verses and refrains until the end of the psalm, when they conclude with a doxology or a final praise.

The Mezmure Dawit is not only a musical tradition, but also a visual art that adorns the walls and ceilings of Ethiopian churches and monasteries. The psalms are illustrated with colorful paintings that depict scenes from the life of King David, such as his anointing by Samuel, his victory over Goliath, his friendship with Jonathan, his sin with Bathsheba, his repentance and forgiveness, his wars and triumphs, and his death and legacy. The paintings also show images of Christ, Mary, angels, saints, and martyrs, who are seen as fulfilling or foreshadowing the prophecies and promises of the psalms.
