will work. But probably only with Pixel-devices.

If google announce it, I see no reason to disbelieve it, they've held
good on the 3 years for later Nexus and all Pixel devices so far.

Will Pixel5a get the same five years, or is this a way to get people to
buy the ugly Pixel6 ?

What you see happening here is that the apologists like Alan Baker
thoughtlessly bought into the Apple ecosystem because they _believed_ the
bullshit that, somehow (magically?) Apple is "better" in some way, shape, or
form.

Even though almost all of Android is updated nowadays _outside_ of the
carriers and OEMs (e.g., even Qualcomm drivers are updated on Google Play
via Projects Mainsline and Treble), the Apple people are desperate for
something (anything) they can claim that iOS does that Android doesn't.

So they latch onto the fact that iOS is the _only_ consumer operating system
which uses the archaic monolithic method of updating the entire operating
system _every_ single time anything needs to be fixed (where each device
gets whatever it didn't yet add).

No other operating system does that archaic type of update but iOS, which is
all they've got to be "proud" of, so, the _first_ reaction by Alan Baker was
to denigrate that Google will likely be updating the pixels for five years
(even as Samsung already updates their devices for at least four years).

Anyway, whenever you see apologists denying facts, it's because they hate
them. They're embarrassed and ashamed of what Apple is, given they paid
extra for what Apple _said_ it was.

And yes, I've been studying these strange apologists for years, as they
intrigue me given they're ignorant but loyal cultists of the oddest order.

5 years from when? This Chromebook came with 6 years to EOL but that was
from the model starting date, not the purchase date. Those of us who
bought late in the product cycle to get a good sale price lost
considerable support time. In Google's favor they upped my model a year
so that it will get updates until next year. Unfortunately unless Google
re-ups me again that will mean I will only have gotten 4 years of updates.

iOS 14 will be released this fall...

....and it will support all iPhones back to the iPhone 6s...

....which will be 6 years from release when iOS 14 goes GM.

I saw that announced elsewhere and it got me to wondering how long the
current official update period is. I'm too lazy to look it up. My Pixel 3
is still receiving OS and security updates and it seems like I've had it
forever.

For Chromebooks of any persuasion the "when" has been the product release
date. Dunno about phones.

Google devotes a page to what I've been calling EOL (end of life) but I
see it's actually now called AUE (auto update expiration).

Course the Chromebooks will still keep working after AUE but one of
their main selling points was/is security and those updates will cease.
With all the W10 bad security publicity lately I kinda feel safer doing

36 months from first sale, or 18 months after withdrawn from sale,
whichever is longest, for a Pixel3, it's the former, so October will be
the end.

Android updates, much like Linux, forever.

Why these dozen apologists always remain _ignorant_ that Android updates
using a modern mechanism similar to how Linux updates is beyond belief.

Apple updates iOS monolithically - all or nothing - which _no_ other modern
consumer operating system does (with updates based on an individual device).

All modern consumer operating systems update _differently_ than the
primitive method that iOS has used since the dawn of smartphones long ago.

As with Linux, Android essentially updates most of the operating system
_forever_ (which is defined as there not being any predetermined EOL date).

Why can't the dozen Apple apologists comprehend how iOS updates differently?
I don't know why.

I suspect they're embarrassed and ashamed of how iOS updates monolithically.

Essentially, even if a single line of code needs to be changed, with iOS
they have to push the entire update to all devices which need it changed.

With Android (and with Linux), they can put the one module which is affected
on the repository and people can grab it independently of the OEM & carrier.
