Wonder if anything still comes through here? After a crazy wave of
spam that even my provider could not filter out, it's now totally
silent. Well, but apart from the spam, very little has been going on
here in the last year anyway.

Yes indeed.
Well, there's you, me, Tim Lang, maybe Antonio.
I fear PTD has given up, and Daud's moved himself elsewhere.
Now all we need is something to talk about.

Just kill all the posts coming from googlegroups.com.

In trn it's /google-groups.googlegroups.com/HInjection-Info:j
Add it to the killfile for the specific newsgroup and it will clean up the
new arrivals.

Using E-S. The spam flood on this server is not that
bad if you compare with what Mixmin is seeing - over
a thousand at a time it seems ;)

Yes, mixmin no longer allows posting but I find it
semi useful for noting missing posts.

I won't miss his glossolaliac musings.

This is probably not a good group for English usage, but here we go:
Yesterday I found myself writing

"I can't be the first one to run into this [problem], can I?"

and then I started wondering about the tag question:
- "can I?"
- "am I?"
- "right?" [avoid the verb]

Because the rule from EFL class--always repeat the auxiliary or use
a form of "do" if there is none--is definitely not the whole truth.

My fave, typical of Malaysian English (Manglish)
- "izzit"? Such a versatile word, same effect as "innit".

My non-native language sense says "can I?" is all right.

If the spam doesn’t subside, then it’s over. I’m not optimistic on that.
For the last few days I’ve been waiting to the ES folks to weed it out.
It’s otherwise impossible to find the legitimate content.

It's injected at Google, and Google automatically adds the header

Injection-Info: google-groups.googlegroups.com

before sending it further. As far as I can tell, if the post arrives from
somewhere else, they do not add this header since the post did not
originate at Google but was received from a peer Usenet server.

My native language sense agrees. A tag “am I?” would get an asterisk, but
“right?” would be fine.

I am currently working as a GP on the west coast of Ireland (a change since I
was last posting here about fifteen years ago, working in IT in Germany) and
many of my patients have an alternation between /hw/ and [f] (in English),
reminiscent of that change. I don’t assert that this is preserved from
protogermanic!

Germanic has alliterated "four" to "five", but Latin and thus the
Romance languages have alliterated "quinque" (five) to "quattuor"
(four)! Or maybe it is a rare but regular soundchange in Latin,
opinions differ. Anyway, the roots for 4 and 5 have different
onsets in PIE, compare for instance Greek or Slavic. But wait,
Slavic has alliterated the d- from the "ten" word to the "nine"
word...
