Pilots should have canceled IFR the second they dropped below Class A
airspace or called "Pan, pan, pan, we're a glider blown off course by
unforecast winds". Then they could have flown where they wanted.
Another case of an uninformed press run amok. I wonder if they
submitted an ASRS report.
