Hi-

I am looking for a working Nano or other IGC approved flight recorder.
Let me know what you have new or used.
It would be shipped to 90717 zip code, Southern CA.

Thanks,
Chris

You should consider the FlyWithCE recorder. It's approved for badges up through IGC Gold and couldn't be simpler to operate. At $159 US its a great bargain. It comes with a decent logbook application too. Wings and Wheels sells them at https://wingsandwheels.com/flywith-ce-recorder-fr300.html

The FlyWithCE unit is a good value. You need to be aware though that it is a "position recorder" rather than a "flight recorder" (IGC jargon). The difference is a position recoder does not have (or record) barographic alitiude, only GPS altitude. FAI rules have a fudge factor on GPS altitude recorders (100m I think) so you have to be awere in situations where alitiude or altitude difference count.

Also it is only said (on that W&W page) to be approved for silver and
gold badges - what about state records?

a. Documentation may be provided by any means acceptable for FAI Silver badge flights.

A slight technicality, but the FR300 is IGC-accepted, not IGC-approved.
IGC have never tested this recorder for compliance. The approval is by
country. Having said that, AFAIK, the FR300 appears to be approved by
more countries than any other. Not a bad buy.

However, have you considered what else a recorder brings to the party,
in addition to being a Flight Recorder.

Do you want a moving map?

Have you considered that PowerFLARM-IGC is an IGC-approved recorder and
may one day save your life?

Lots to think about.

That's what I did, when I found a deal on a PowerFLARM-IGC it got me
both functionalities in one purchase. On its own, it's not
user-friendly as a logger, if you want to pre-declare tasks. But
connected (by data cable) to my glide computer (Tophat) it is easy to
enter tasks (in Tophat) and then with a couple of taps transfer them to
the FLARM as the official logger. The FLARM also serves as the GPS data
source for the glide computer, and the glide computer also shows FLARM
traffic on its moving map.

Nice thought, but in earlier postings, Chris indicated he is a student
pilot flying a club 2-33. Would be nice if the club installed a PF in
the ship for everyone to use.

On a side note, it is a pity such a modern (and expensive) device as a
PF-IGC is only approved for diamonds, when a lowly Nano is approved for
all flights. Even the Fusion has the same restriction.

Just one thing to consider in relation to the position recorder. At the
2021 IGC Plenary the year 2 proposal to eliminate written declarations
was approved. I think this comes into force with this October's version
of IGC code.

After that time paper declarations are no longer valid and it notes:

The only significant side-effect of this proposal is that it would no
longer be possible to use a PR to document a Gold Distance flight with
declared Turn Points (except in those countries who permit Internet
declarations).

Thanks to all of you that have replied here.
My quest for a flight or position recorder comes after a very good (for me) flight in a club 2-33 for 3H27m recorded on XCSoar.
I think that if I had used an IGC approved flight recorder I could have bagged my Silver Altitude Gain with this flight, releasing at 4250'MSL and topping out at @ 9800'msl.
Does anyone know if I can still submit this? I don't think so, but am not sure.

Here is the flight in question-
https://skylines.aero/flights/134993

Because of this, and all of the info above, I think that my decision is still for a Nano.
The only reason that I reject the Flarm is because I am using the moving map in XCSoar already, and have definite intention to purchase a plane of my own with proper electronics soon after my check ride. The Nano will fill the gap until then in the Clubs' 1-34.

Thanks again for all the info.
I just missed a used Nano for sale from Horst in Tx. I will likely just buy a demo unit from WnW this week.

Happy landings,
Chris Behm, AKA "Target"

Nope. You need a certified logger for that, an Official Observer lined
up ahead of time, and a few other items. See ssa.org/Badges and Records.

I think a Nano is a great choice for you. It's easy to declare a task
using a Windows PC with their utility program.

Good luck,
Dave

I have a Nano, PowerFlarm and LX9000 in my Pegase 101A. All are loggers. I download directly from the Nano for most flights, as it is very simple. Internet access (marginal at Moriarty on the ramp) using LX Connect is a hassle, and the PF is completely mysterious, as it merely flashes red/amber/green lights with no user interface to tell you when the download is complete.

I just pull the Nano out, stick it in my pocket, and after a stop at the brewery, transfer the file to my computer. Then I upload it to the OLC. Assuming the flight isn't too embarrassing. (something that has happened too often this season)

In the case of the "Portable PowerFLARM", which has a (small and dim)
display, you can select the "IGC writeout" action and it tells you when
it's done. Then you can pluck out the SD card and take it with you
while the FLARM stays in the glider.

What I actually do though, since I have the FLARM attached (via serial
cable) to a device (e-reader) running Tophat (similar for XCsoar): after
that action on the FLARM, Tophat can copy the IGC file through the cable
into the memory in that device. Then I take that device home, and
transfer the file (via WiFi) to my computer. (The file copied from the
FLARM is IGC-approved, while Tophat's own log file is not.) Tophat can
also send task declarations to the FLARM (easy! - but difficult without
this connection), and can show FLARM traffic on its display.

Gee, that's just wunnerful. For you. I don't have a portable PF, or an e-reader and don't like Tophat in comparison to the capability of the LX9000. Nano is simpler, and I have plenty of IGC backups with the PF and LX.

You can also use the nano config app on your phone over bluetooth if you
have an Android phone. Configure the nanao, declare tasks and download
flights

For anyone buying used recorders, there are some recorder types with
variants of Approved and NON-approved models, examples of this are Oudie
and Flarm.

There are also a number of useful devices which produce IGC files, but
are not IGC-approved recorders.

If you want to uses it for IGC claims, make sure that you are buying an
Approved variant.

Caveat Emptor!
