Does anyone have experience with an MGL Alt5 altimeter in a glider? I'm considering replacing my Winter 57mm with one of these.

Looks pretty nice and has a low power consumption of 33-73mA depending on the backlight brightness.

Have you considered an LXNav ADI? It's a combination digital altimeter, ASI (with analog
needle and digital display), and compensated vario. More expensive, but might fit your
needs well. The usual suspects carry it.

I have not used the MGL altimeter, but if it is built like their G-meter, I found it a cheap, chintzy unit.

Consider the Air Avionics Air Control Display with altimeter function. It is a TSO'd altimeter as well as altitude encoder. I have one and it controls my Trig TT22, provides the altitude data to the Trig and is the primary altimeter in the panel. It can also be used to control Becker, TQ and Air Com radios.

This gives you up to three instruments in one 57 mm panel hole and saves all sorts of panel space.

I have had two MGL instruments in my gliders and am currently flying with their volt/ammeter. I find MGL products to be well-built and reliable.

The advantage of the Air Avionics altimeter is that it is certified (required only if you are flying a certificated glider). It also costs 2-3 times as much, typical for TSO's instruments.
