Had a friend ask me about a picture of geese at 18K he saw on R.A.S.
years ago. Thanks to the Wayback Machine, the geese live on.

Photo by Al McDonald, who used to be a regular here.

So, not cleared for Class A, eh? That's a pretty tough bird that can flap and fly that high.

I think they had a little atmospheric assistance to get up that high.

Here's a rather long and rambling article that eventually offers an explanation for how evolution produced birds that can live at 28,000 feet.

Well I think they should have set "cruise wings" at that altitude rather
than flapping!

Isn't that weird? People keep saying you can't post pictures on R.A.S.,
but you and I aren't smart enough to know it doesn't work! It's like a
secret little society hiding in plain sight.

I don't know when that capability was available. In the olden days, it wasn't possible,
and there was no way to attach a picture.

I always looked at that photo and thought it's wings were in tuck, not flapping. I assumed it was in the up portion of the wave and was at max tuck attempting to maintain some forward speed and not get any higher. One of my favorite photos.

"To their surprise, the researchers discovered that instead of flying in the early
afternoon, when heat from the earth can create 12-mile-per-hour updrafts, bar-headed geese
consistently fly at night or during early-morning hours, when there is actually a slight
downdraft."

I used to be able to post pictures and HTML to RAS but now I can't but I
can still see them.  I have Thunderbird setup to compose messages in
HTML but it will only transmit plain text.  I don't know if an update to
Thunderbird caused this change or maybe I changed something and that was
a side effect.  Any ideas?

Don't know. I've never been able to compose in html, even though I've
tried to enable that. All I can do is attach a picture to a message,
just like in regular email. Don't know what the size limits might be,
the ones I just posted were fairly small, reduced res pics. The
messages go out as multi-part MIME's, so it's all ascii characters.

I'm on Tbird 91.5.0, using eternal-september and Ubuntu.

I tried attaching a 1.6mb picture to this posting, just to test the limits, but it was
rejected with the notice postings are limited to 65K. An image of only 45K was rejected as
improper content type. So no luck using Thunderbird on Windows 10. Oddly, I can receive an
image - got to be small and PC (Proper Content).

The original pic I posted started at 89KB, the message went out as 124KB
after conversion to ascii, so I'm not hitting a 65KB limit.

Maybe I should post some funny cat videos to test the real limits :-)

Needs to be sent in multiple messages, and an user's Usenet reader
must be able to re-assemble

I have not done this in years, but here's a pic of Dassault's Falcon
10X snipped from this pic: 157 Kbytes

I've got a 1MB limit. See my Plaque at Bishop CA posting (if you can)

Geese do fly at night. I was approaching Terrell, TX Municipal (KTRL) at night in a Cherokee 140. Switched on the landing light as I entered downwind at 800 feet AGL and saw a flock of snow geese just below me. Very handsome birds, snow geese.

That's the obvious answer: post a URL pointing to the picture rather than
the picture itself.

My newsreader, Pan 0.149, passed the URL to my web browser, Brave, and
the picture came up immediately, full sized and zoomable.
