FAA released new AD today on the Grob 115EG, all control hinges must be replaced, estimated cost 4K. Sorry Motorglider guys and gals. Old Bob, The Purist

That's an airplane, Bob. No need to feel sorry for glider folks, since it's not even used
for towing. Now, if a Pawnee, which is also an airplane, has AD, why then, we all feel
badly for the "towed" guys and gals. And you, of course :^)

Eric, once a Grob always a Grob, just a motorglider with a bigger engine. Referencing the Pawnee, many AD's, costly to repair, drinks fuel, the best towplane ever!! It even comes to the rescue of that DG motorglider here at the field, what a poor excuse for a motorglider, I think that came from your neck of the woods. Old Bob, The Purist

I recognize the value of the Pawnee to our sport, despite it's imperfections. Ditto for
some of our towpilots ;^)

But the Grob G 520 Egrett, the turbine-propeller powered tow plane used in the Perlan project, is registered in the US as a motor-glider!

The registrations I've see clearly show "glider", as does the registration for my ASH26E.
I don't think there is a registration category for "motorglider".

The FAA is adopting a new airworthiness directive (AD) for all GROB
Aircraft SE (type certificate previously held by GROB Aircraft AG)
(GROB) Model G 115EG airplanes.

The MCAI identifies the unsafe condition as in-flight detachment of a
rudder actuator hinge bracket. This AD requires repairing the support
structure at the attachment to the attachment bolts on certain flight
control surfaces, inspecting the support structure at the attachment
bolts of all flight control surfaces, and taking corrective actions if
discrepancies are detected. The FAA is issuing this AD to address the
unsafe condition on these products.
