I've again updated the Butterfly traffic display firmware.
Fixes in 4.1:
- bugfix for intermittent FLARMnet info display
- minor bug fixes and optimization
Earlier fixes in 4.0 were:
- reliable IGC file download
- PEV feature added
- many bug fixes for more reliable operation

Special thanks to Dan and Nicholas for the help flight testing.

Update as follows:
- format a fresh USB stick no larger than 64Gb
- in your browser, left-click on link below
- save page as bfd_4_1.bfw onto USB stick (ensure no TXT suffix or other bollix)
- make sure to "eject" USB stick prior unplugging from Winbloze
- with power off, plug stick into FLARM core
- while depressing butterfly button, power-on flarm/butterfly
- Butterfly will initially show "Waiting"...
- Butterfly should start loading within 15-30 seconds
- Wait a couple minutes and you should see Butterfly start with new firmware

Enjoy,
Best Regards, Dave

Hi Dave - thanks for the update! Quick question - how does the PEV work? Is it in the "long push" menu?

Cheers,

Long press -> select FLARM -> short press... Last choice (select, short press).

Here's a link to a picture of the menu which comes up after the FLARM 'long push' menu.

You get a Pilot Event Confirmed notification after pushing.

After downloading the bfd_4_1.bfw file, I noticed that I also have a bfd_4_1x3.bfw file in my USB stick archive, related to your (Dave's) message from March 17, 2021.
What's the difference and which one is the current recommended file ?

The x3 version was experimental (test version), minor cleanups in the
released version. Please use the release version.

I thought it would be useful to add a note here for owners where the ButterFly display is installed alongside another device which displays flarm data eg LX S100. This means that there will be a 'Y' splitter installed between the Flarm device (eg PowerFlarm Core) and the two display devices (the Butterfly and the S100).

The thing to remember is that whilst both flarm displays can receive data from the Powerflarm simultaneously, only one display can send data to the Powerflarm at any time. The 'Y' splitter should have 2 ports marked 'Rx/Tx' and one port marked 'Tx only' (meaning the port only proves Tx out, which becomes the displays Rx in). In this situation, the Butterfly display is usually installed as the secondary display and the cables/ splitter configured so it can only receive data via the 'Tx only' port. (Note: In some installations, the 'Y' splitter may have 3x Tx/Rx ports but the cable from the splitter to the Butterfly has the Rx wire disabled).

For the Butterfly to update, there must be Tx/Rx between the PowerFlarm Core and the Butterfly. During the power-on initialization, with the Flarm button depressed, the Butterfly sends a message to the Powerflarm core telling it to look for firmware and ..bln files on the datastick and then send them to the Butterfly.

So if you have multiple flarm displays, you may need to temporarily change the configuration at the 'Y' splitter.

One last point to consider is how does the PowerFlarm get its 12volt power source. It may be via the Flarm cable from the S100 or directly from a sub-fuse via the D-plug. So if you have change the configuration of the 'Y' splitter, make sure there is still power to the Powerflarm Core (which then powers the Butterfly.

A splitter is not necessarily required. PowerFLARM devices have
TWO output ports. Most installations use the RJ45 port for Butterfly
or similar display, and the serial port within the DB port for
another device (for example ILEC SN10).

If you are using FLARM Fusion, FLARM have just released (end October
2022) a new version of the "Hub" firmware to fix some serial
communications bug. Note that updating "HUB" firmware requires a PC
(unlike the core FLARM firmware which is updated via USB stick).
If you are using the DB port on FLARM Fusion, this update
is highly recommended.

Hope that helps!
Best Regards, Dave
