someone texts me through whatsapp?

If so, that's different from the primary text app, right? That's always
running?

So if so, it would be more reliable to send people normal texts insted
of whatsapp texts, because then they woudl always get a beep and, unless
they had suppressed them, a notification.

Same questions about getting a notification on the home screen. Last
night someone using whatsapp sent me a text in the middle of the night.
If it beeped I wouldn't have heard it but I thought I would get a
notificaion from whatsapp on the home screen. But I didn't. I've
suppressed a lot of notifications but I was careful not to suppress its,
and I checked today and afaict, none are suppressed. Maybe it had to
be running and it wasn't?

If that doesn't answer things I'll go into detail about the settings.

No. It is running in the so called background mode. You cannot stop this
process.
